Early Years at Ashfield Primary School

At the heart of our Early Years setting are our key values:

Be Curious, Be Kind, Be Resilient, Be You.

These values guide everything we do and help create an inspiring, positive and nurturing environment where every child feels safe, respected and valued. We encourage children to explore the world with curiosity, to show kindness and respect towards others, to develop resilience when faced with challenges, and to celebrate their individuality. By embedding these values into everyday learning experiences, we support children in developing confidence, empathy and a strong sense of self.

Our mission statement,

Nurturing our children to grow, achieve and thrive.

reflects our commitment to supporting every child’s development academically, socially and emotionally. We aim to create an environment where children feel inspired to learn, confident to try new things and supported to reach their full potential.

We believe that children learn best when they feel secure and supported. Our practitioners work closely with families to ensure each child’s individual needs, interests and abilities are recognised and celebrated. Through a balance of child-initiated and adult-guided activities, we provide rich learning experiences that support children’s holistic development.

Our curriculum is guided by the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage, ensuring that all children make progress across the seven areas of learning and development.

Key Areas of Learning and Development

Prime Areas

These areas are fundamental as they build the foundations for children’s learning.

Communication and Language
Supporting children to develop listening, understanding and speaking skills through conversation, storytelling and interactive activities.

Physical Development
Encouraging children to develop coordination, movement and healthy lifestyles through both indoor and outdoor activities.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Helping children build confidence, resilience, independence and positive relationships with others.

Specific Areas

These areas strengthen and apply learning from the prime areas.

Literacy
Developing early reading and writing skills through stories, phonics, mark-making and meaningful language experiences.

Mathematics
Supporting children in understanding numbers, patterns, shape, space and measures through play and practical exploration.

Understanding the World
Helping children make sense of their environment, people, technology and communities.

Expressive Arts and Design
Encouraging creativity, imagination and self-expression through art, music, movement, role play and design.

Early Learning Goals (ELGs)

The Early Learning Goals describe the expected level of development children should reach by the end of the Reception year. They provide a framework for assessing children’s progress and ensuring they are ready for the transition into Year 1.

These goals focus on children demonstrating skills, knowledge and understanding across all seven areas of learning.

Characteristics of Effective Learning

We recognise that how children learn is just as important as what they learn. These important characteristics underpin our EYFS curriculum and are an integral part of our day-to-day practice.

1. Playing and Exploring

Children investigate, explore and experience things through active play. They show curiosity and are willing to try new experiences.

2. Active Learning

Children concentrate, keep trying when things are challenging and enjoy their achievements.

3. Creating and Thinking Critically

Children develop their own ideas, make links between experiences and find ways to solve problems.

Our Commitment

Through high-quality teaching, engaging environments and strong partnerships with parents and carers, we aim to ensure that every child:

Feels happy, safe and valued

Develops confidence and independence

Builds strong foundations for future learning

Achieves their full potential
